Multiverse School Newsletter - 01/21

🚀 1/21 Multiverse School Weekly Newsletter 🚀

Hey Multiverse Crew,

Busy last week. We’ve rearchitected the application and onboarding flow yet again, as we will continue to do as we get bigger. We’re trying to be intentional about who we bring in so that the vibe remains impeccable.

Job Search Standup

Don't forget to join the Job Search Standup every day at 9:00 AM. It's a crucial space to focus on job hunting or lead-gen activities. $20 is the weekly rate, which is just $5 a day. Multiverse students have it included as part of their tuition. So far, 50% of the 32 respondents to our survey got jobs! Hooray for y’all! We didn’t throw out any data (we got 32 respondents), but didn’t include anyone we didn’t hear back from. To be clear, this is a much lower rate than my average- probably my lowest since beginning teaching people to get jobs- I’m willing to chalk some of it up to the market, but I’d love your feedback on what might help you so please drop me an email if you have any thoughts about what’s not working for you.

New Cohort Kicks Off Monday

We’re onboarding new students this Monday! Existing students should say hi during the Onboarding at 1pm, but you don’t need to stay for the entire thing. Excited to have everyone meet!

Are you waiting for an interview?

We’re backed up on interviews, and we’ve also switched up the process. Hang tight, we’ll get you on-boarded as soon as possible. We’ll have the new calendar available next week.

Machine Learning Kickoff

This week we’re kicking off Machine Learning for existing Multiverse students. This will be a fairly involved course, so we’ll focus on weaving in stuff you might want for your personal projects. This week we’ll focus on the courses and modules we’re using. I’m using a lot of external materials, but it’s my favorite parts of my favorite courses, with the out-of-date stuff cut from the course.

Rescheduled to This Week: Storytelling - Foundations of Storytelling and Character Development

Join us on Monday, January 22nd at 6:00 PM Pacific for an enchanting journey into storytelling. Discover the art of crafting captivating tales and creating memorable characters. This session is perfect for beginners eager to explore the fundamentals of storytelling and character development. Last week this was on MLK and I, Liz forgot to cancel it.

Artificial Intelligence and Agents

Interested in AI? Join us on January 22nd at 5pm Pacific where we’ll focus on more Autogen - of noted interest is connecting LLMs other than OpenAI with Autogen, and the use of these LLMs with the ReAct framework to allow them to use Tools, aka Function Calling. We’ll focus on walking through this together and everyone getting through all the steps as this is a fairly complex walk-through.

Learn to Code

And for those just starting out, our regular Learn to Code Together session on January 25th at 5:00 PM will focus on mob programming for beginners. You will be asked to code in front of other people. It won’t just be you asked to do it though. We’ll all share our screens.

Junior / Senior Split on Integrated Tech Demo

As a reminder: I’ve heard Jr. Devs are fairly intimidated any time we work on something for the senior devs, and seniors are a bit bored when we focus on coding slowly. As a result, we've split the Integrated Tech Demo between Junior and Senior devs. Junior devs will have sessions on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, while Tuesdays and Thursdays are reserved for those not in the learning phase. Anyone can attend any session, but anyone placed in the Senior Developers session can only ask questions during the Junior Devs session, not give answers.

Monday, Wednesday and Friday sessions will be focused on keeping everyone following along- come prepared to put your hands on the keyboard.

Tuesday and Thursday will focus on higher-order complexity and patterns that are fairly involved- don’t expect to keep up during the demo as a junior developer (or as a senior)- they’re mostly to explain the pattern, and then give you a video to follow along with.
